How to Find Stillness in a Busy Life

We live in a world that rarely asks us to slow down.

There is always another notification, another email, another message to answer, another task waiting to be done. Even when we finally sit down, it can feel difficult to actually switch off.

Finding stillness doesn't necessarily mean sitting in silence for an hour or committing to a complicated meditation routine.

Sometimes, stillness can be much simpler.

It can be putting your phone down for a few minutes. Taking a slow breath. Going outside. Feeling your feet on the ground. Or holding something tangible in your hand and allowing yourself to be present for a moment.

What does it mean to find stillness?

Stillness isn't about having a completely quiet mind.

It's about creating a small pause in the middle of everything else.

For some people, that might be meditation. For others, it might be walking along the beach, making a cup of tea, journaling or sitting outside in the morning.

The important part is giving yourself permission to stop doing and simply be for a moment.

Start by creating small pauses

You don't need to completely change your routine to feel more present.

Try creating small moments throughout your day:

Put your phone down.
Instead of automatically reaching for your phone whenever you have a spare minute, leave it somewhere out of reach and allow yourself to have a few minutes without it.

Take three slow breaths.
Before moving onto the next task, pause and take three deliberate breaths. Notice what you can see, hear and feel around you.

Step outside.
Feel the sun, notice the breeze or listen to the sounds around you. Nature gives us a simple reason to stop and pay attention.

Create a tactile ritual.
Holding something smooth and tangible can give your hands and attention somewhere to settle. This is one reason people naturally reach for objects when they are thinking, concentrating or feeling overwhelmed.

You don't need another screen

When we're looking for a break, it's easy to reach for our phones.

A few minutes of scrolling can quickly become twenty minutes, and suddenly the “break” hasn't really felt like a break at all.

Try replacing one of those scrolling moments with something that doesn't require a screen.

Make a coffee. Stretch. Step outside. Write something down. Hold a centring stone.

The goal isn't to remove technology from your life. It's simply to create moments where technology isn't taking up your attention.

What about fidgeting?

Fidgeting is something many of us do naturally.

You might tap your fingers, twist a ring, play with your hair or reach for a traditional fidget toy while concentrating.

Fidget toys can be useful for some people, but they aren't the only option.

A centring stone offers a quieter, more natural-feeling alternative. Rather than a bright plastic fidget or fidget spinner, a smooth ceramic stone can simply sit in your palm while you work, pause or take a moment for yourself.

At I’ve Got You, our centring stones are plastic free, shaped from ceramic clay and inspired by the Australian landscape.

They're designed to be held, touched and carried — giving you something tangible to return to when the world feels a little too busy.

Create your own five-minute stillness ritual

Try this the next time you feel distracted or overwhelmed:

1. Put your phone somewhere out of reach.

2. Sit somewhere comfortable.

3. Hold your centring stone in your palm.

4. Notice its shape, texture and weight.

5. Take three slow breaths.

6. Notice what you can hear around you.

7. Give yourself five minutes without needing to achieve anything.

That's it.

No complicated routine. No perfect meditation technique.

Just five minutes to pause.

Stillness doesn't have to look a certain way

You don't have to become a morning meditation person.

You don't need a perfectly quiet house, an hour of free time or a carefully curated wellness routine.

Stillness can happen in the car before you walk inside.

At your desk between meetings.

On the couch after the kids are in bed.

Walking along the beach.

Or sitting with a cup of tea while you leave your phone in another room.

It's about finding those little moments where you can reconnect with yourself instead of constantly moving onto the next thing.

A little reminder to pause

Life isn't going to become quiet just because we want it to.

There will always be notifications, responsibilities, noise and things competing for our attention.

But we can create little pockets of stillness within it.

Sometimes, all it takes is a few minutes, a slower breath and something tangible to remind us to come back to the present.

Whatever you need, I’ve got you.
